Savory San Mateo

What a great night in the fun fun fun San Mateo!  We started at the chic and hip Attic Restaurant, where specialty drinks were flowing while we were treated to Garlic Noodles topped with Miso Scallop, and scrumptious finger-licking awesome Adobo chicken wings. Everywhere we turned, someone else was saying how they had to come back to Attic restaurant! It was a great start to an awesome food night!

Next we were off to Original Buffalo Wings. We feasted on fresh homemade chips and fries. And then were treated to two kinds of chicken wings and some Philly cheese steak sandwiches. All we could hear was happy munching as people dug right in! Yup, we were already feeling kind of full, but happy and ready to Dishcrawl onward through San Mateo.

Chips and Fries

The next stop was Pancho Villa Taqueria. We were spoiled with the option to choose from a wide array of agua fresca flavors to pair with some flavorful Chorizo and al Pastor tacos! We devoured them with toppings from the scrumptious salsa bar. Everyone had satisfied smiles as we continued crawling onto our next destination – dessert!

Yes, there was more to come. We ended up at Dessert Republic, a neat Hong Kong inspired spot.  It was already crowded with late-night foodies, but we piled right in! We were treated to delicate, fresh and airy egg puffs, intriguing black sesame pudding, amazing mango pudding, and hot and gooey Nutella crepes! It was the perfect sweet ending to a fabulous night! We will come back to San Mateo again, so make sure you join us!

New Friends Eating Like Family for Lunch

Why does the lunch hour have to be so hectic and yet still so uneventful? Oh, wait. It doesn’t!

Some wonderful Lunchcrawlers joined me in a family-style tasting of Las Americas’ most popular dishes for lunch and mingling all in 60 minutes. There was no hustle and bustle in this quaint space, only relaxing music playing and the aroma of food being made. Julio Shimabukuro and Karina Tamaki own this cozy space and bring San Mateo a taste of what Peru has to offer.

We started off with sweet conversation over freshly made passion fruit juice and Cuzqueña (Peruvian beer). The delicious flavors of the culture were a first for us all and a perfect way to break out of the monotony of a normal day. We all snacked on house made corn nuts while getting to know each other more. These are far from your packaged corn nuts at the gas station convenience store. Boy were they tasty!

Next came our main courses which we were all able to share family style. What a great way to chat about the food by sharing in the same plates together! Scoop, scoop, pass… repeat! There was arroz con pollo which had deliciously subtle Peruvian fried rice with chicken on top and aji de gallina which was chicken served in a creamy yellow and slightly spicy sauce.

Not to be biased in the meat department, Chef Julio also served Lunchcrawlers with the house special lomo saltado. The dish has top sirloin strips sautéed with onions, tomatoes and fries. Sounds good doesn’t it?  In fact, it’s so good that Julio is unofficially crowned the King of Lomo by his fellow peers!

With about 15 years in the restaurant business and operating Las Americas since 2007, the owners have perfected delicate treats like flan and alfajor, both of which we all got to finish our wonderful meal off with. The alfajor, made of two pieces of soft shortbread baked and filled with manjar blanco, toffee pudding made with caramelized milk and dusted in powered sugar, left a mark on us all with a sweet taste of a no hassle lunch and others with the mark of powdered sugar shirts.

Want to escape reality during lunch? We’ll get you fed and mingling in just 60 minutes so you can return to you day happy! Can’t join us for lunch? Check out our Dishcrawl Dinners and Dishcrawls!

Downtown San Mateo Gets Dishcrawled!

What’s better than a nice warm evening enjoying a lovely dinner? How about a nice warm dinner enjoying dinner at five different restaurants? I think that sounds fabulous! Right? Well, this Wednesday, we traveled to five different places to taste delicious food in Downtown San Mateo. Even better a Dishcrawl in San Mateo!

Our first stop was Rave Burger where Owner Gordon provided us with tasty Burger Shots with Curly Fries and Sweet Potato Fries. Since the weather was so nice we were able to enjoy our eats outside and converse with new faces.

Onward to our second stop of the night. We headed to Fletch’s. Owner Robert Fletcher specializes in authentic Chicago Style hot dogs. You’ll find the dogs at this new town favorite unlike any you’ve had before. Robert’s motto here is “Soggy fries, Crispy Dog.” Doesn’t sound appealing? You might want to think again and try Fletch’s. They’ll have you singing to a new tune in a heartbeat.

While at Fletch’s we munched on to die for Chicago Dogs and Fresh Cut Fries. Each dog comes Chicago Style, which means mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, pickle, sport peppers, and, the final touch, celery salt. You won’t find ketchup on these dogs, but if you really want it just tell Robert to turn around when you do it.

Ever have the need to feel like a king when eating? Well, our next stop made us feel just like that. Kingfish did the trick because our Dishcrawlers were lucky enough to have our own private seating area with a bartender. Royal treatment or what? Kingfish is located in a historical 1920′s art deco building and specializes in American food.

Out from the Kingfish kitchen were Warm Housemade Truffled Potato Chips with blue cheese and chives. The aroma of truffle made mouths water! Next were platters of Garlic Cheesy Bread and scrumptious Fliet Mignon Potstickers with a pesto aoli.

Dishcrawlers enjoyed our night of luxury at Kingfish with a view overlooking the downtown streets and were able to chat with table mates.

As we mobbed through the streets of San Mateo, to visit our next stop at Astaria. We were greeted by Owner and Chef Alicia. She artfully described Astaria’s style of food as “robust California American fare.” With a warm welcome from Chef Alicia, one can only assume the food at Astaria will make you feel warm and nice inside. The food did just that.

Chef Alicia prepared us Asian Style Pulled Pork Tostadas with hoisin-ginger pulled pork and mango escabeche and a Sauteed Portobello, Manchego, and Gorgonzola Quesadilla with parsley chili cream. Each were equally delicious and left an imprint in your brain and mouth, making you want to come back for more.

I cannot forget to mention the deliciously, thirst quenching Pineapple Mojito. It is so good, you don’t even know you’re drinking a mojito!

As a surprise for our Dishcrawlers, we added a fifth stop to our normal four restaurant Dishcrawl. Where did we go? Beard Papa’s! Where Jamie from Beard Papa’s gave us “nom-ilicious” treats to end our night. We got a sampling of Chocolate, Strawberry, and Vanilla Cream Puffs and Cheesecake Bites. Just enough to satisfy the sweet tooth in anyone.

I think I can safely say Beard Papa’s was a hit!

If you missed this event, don’t. We’ll be back in the Peninsula before you know it! But if you’re in the area, check out our upcoming Dishcrawls!

Until we eat again,

Jackie
