Dishcrawl NY- We Love Gluten Free

From truckcrawls to dishcrawls, we are always looking for ways to make it fun for Dishcrawlers and to connect with the community.

Last Wednesday, on September 7th, Dishcrawl teamed up with the New York Celiac Disease Meetup Group and the general public to have a gluten free night. The day was gloomy with a downpour of rain. We decided to change it up a bit and have a 4 dish extravaganza in one place instead of dishcrawling through the city. Each Dishcrawl is different and unique!

Our event was held at Heathers Bar in the East Village. Heathers, owned by Heather Millstone, is an unofficial gluten friendly bar. Heather has been gluten free for six years and wanted to have a space where if you are gluten free, it would not be an issue. Heathers Bar has options of gluten free beer, ciders, and of course tequila! We also had a visit from Heather’s adorable puppy Stevie Nicks that night.

To welcome everyone, we started with a dessert appetizer of mini cupcakes from Tu-Lu’s Bakery. They were so cute and delicious! The frosting was perfect. We had an excellent sample of red velvet, caramel, vanilla with chocolate ganache icing, chocolate, etc. Co-owner and baker of Tu-Lu’s Bakery Jen Wells joined us for the night. We could not thank her enough for lending us a helping hand. Talk about teamwork!

Since our gluten free Dishcrawl centered around the East Village, we had to serve up some macs and pizza from S’mac and Viva Herbal Pizzeria. We served up three different kinds of macs: All American, Cheeseburger, and 4 Cheese. Everything at S’mac can be made to order gluten free. The pasta is made from brown rice. As for Viva Herbal Pizzeria, they recently started making a gluten free pizza crust. We tried the Sorrentino, Al Pesto, and Napoletana. There was so much to go around.

Our last surprise of the night was donuts and regular sized carrot and chocolate cupcakes from BabyCakes in the Lower East Side. We were quite happy to see the reaction to the donuts. Yes! Gluten free donuts exist!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our gluten free night. Check out our events page for Dishcrawls in your hood.

Three cheers for gluten free options and more. Let’s do it again!

From Chelsea to Midtown Dishcrawl in NYC

Our first Chelsea Dishcrawl in July was such a success that we decided to stay and explore on over to Midtown. The event was sold out and August 30th turned out to be an epic night!

Our first stop was Mooncake Foods where we were greeted by Amy. Mooncake Foods specializes in Asian comfort food. Amy was kind enough to share with us her grandmother’s curry.

It was mild and meant to give you warm fuzzy feelings about home. We also tasted Grilled Tofu and Buckwheat Noodle Salad with Ginger Cilantro Pesto and a serving of Miso Glazed Salmon.

Our second stop of the night walked us over to K-Town where we visited the brand new Muk Eun Ji. Our bellies were in for a treat because Muk Eun Ji let us tryKimchi Pancakes, Soon Doo Bo, Bibimbap, Galbi, Pork Belly, and of course their famous aged kimchi!

A special thank you goes out to all the partners of Muk Eun Ji. We learned a lot about the kimchi making process and can’t wait to try the hundreds of other items on the menu.

Ilili, a Lebanese restaurant with Mediterranean influences, was just around the corner. We took a nice walk and then settled down to meet the passionate Chef Philippe Massoud. He and Sous Chef Erik Osol prepared for us lamb with tomatoes.

As the night came to an end, we made a quick stop at Ayza Wine & Chocolate Bar for cheesecharcuterie and Jacques Torres chocolates. Those who lingered long enough were treated to mini shots of Chocolate Martinis.

Looked good? Join us on the next Dishcrawl! Check the events page for future Dishcrawls.

Counting down the days till we feast again,

Rachel

Truckcrawl Around Union Square

Truckcrawl was the second of our inaugural Summer events. On July 20th, 32 Dishcrawlers joined us for our epic food truck feast through Union Square. We met promptly at 7:30 PM and it wasn’t long till everyone was chatting like old friends.

Our first stop was Wall Street Burgers where we met Moe and his family. Moe couldn’t have been a nicer guy. We’re happy he kicked Wall Street life in exchange for Wall Street Burgers.

The 100% Grass fed Black Angus Beef slider was juicy and delicious with their spicy WSB sauce. We even got a side of curly fries.

On to cool down, we got some Italian ice from Andy’s Italian Ice. Andy and Kim Miscioscia drove down all the way from Long Island to join our Truckcrawl.

They gave us free reign to choose any ice flavor we wanted whether it was water or creme. Some of the popular choices were Blue Raspberry, Watermelon, and get this, Sponge Bob!

After a little brain freeze we dishcrawled just a few feet over to The Frying Dutchmen.

There we met Ben Goldberg and his Frying crew.

The guys had a special off the menu item for us. Chicken wings! Everyone went wild for them as they had a really good spicy southern fried coating on them, were really juicy, and were the icing on the cake to the mixture of Belgian fries and sweet potato order everyone got.

The dipping sauces were amazing as well.  Guacahummus and Locked N’ Loaded got thumbs up from Dishcrawlers.

Our last Truckcrawl stop was Wafels and Dinges. Raof and Kevin, or “Freddy” and “Freddy”, were hilarious and friendly.

We got to sample a mini wafelini with the choice of one topping and a spread of chocolate or Speculoos.

We also were given Biskoff cookies. Sweet sweet gingerbread. What a wonderful way to conclude our first Truckcrawl in NYC.

We hope you join us next time. There will be plenty of good eats.

Peace, Neighbors, and Burgers,

Rachel
