Edmonton Dishcrawl on February 28th, 2012 – Foodie Treats on 124 Street!

Tuesday night, Alberta’s fantastic Dishcrawl communities saw Edmonton with our second event, while Calgary was holding their first event the same night!

We began our journey on Tuesday night at The Dish Bistro (12417 Stony Plain Rd) where we were greeted by their lovely team and enjoyed a delicious savoury trio and a sweet trio! Their atmosphere and concept exuded down-to-earth comfort food and warmth. We also learned about their “Secret Garden”, which we’ll all have to make a point to visit during the spring/summer season!

Chef Michael chatted with us about the wonderful things we’d be trying. Our savoury trio included their pear and cambazola triangle, creamy (but light) artichoke and goat cheese dip with purple yam and papadam “chips”, and a lamb phyllo. Their sweet treat for us was a trio including a tangy lemon tart, toffee pudding and chocolate brownie!

Our second stop was Matahari, near the end of 124 street (10108B 124 Street). Along one wall was a great seating arrangement! Four person booths side by side within what looked like a massive BOAT! Our hostess for the evening was Wendy, who shared with us the various focal points of their cuisine. We tried mango rice paper wraps with hoisin sauce, Thai curry puffs with a tamarind dipping sauce and Babi kecap (Indonesian braised pork) with coconut rice!

Next, we journeyed through an alley (I promised I’d keep them all safe – am certain that all our Dishcrawlers reading this would burst into laughter at that comment!) to a beautiful HOUSE, which happened to have been our third stop! The Manor Casual Bistro (10109 125 Street) was at one point the residence of former Alberta Attorney General John Farquhar Lymburn. A quaint two level home, there is a small private dining room on the main floor, then our Dishcrawlers took over the upper level of the home! Executive Chef (and co-Proprietor) Cyrilles Koppert led us through his preparation and cooking techniques for all of the dishes we tried, to the delight of the Dishcrawl crowd! We started with their poached pear salad, with Danish blue cheese and candied pecans. Our next item was a slow braised duck springroll, and we finished our sampling with their tiramisu!

A few blocks away (thankfully! The walk in the crisp Edmonton air was great to aid with our food comas) was our final stop of the evening, the delightful d’Lish Urban Kitchen & Wine Bar (10418 124 Street)! Creative warrior and owner, Amanda talked to our crowd about their history and passion for celebrating local producers and farmers and Executive Chef Sarah got our Dishcrawlers excited about the food they were about to taste! They launched their new menu the same day of our event, and we learned about their new lunch service, and also their Sunday family-style dinners! We got to try their seasonal soup shot creation (tomato & lentil was the flavour of choice!), a pair of mini tomato risotto cakes with housemade aioli and finished our evening off with their delicious raspberry and chocolate whoopie pie! Our gracious hosts also gifted us with a lovely parting gift of a bag of Truffled Dill Perfectly Popp’d Corn to continue our experience at home!

To our wonderful host restaurants – A TREMENDOUS thank you to you and your wonderful staff for the drool-worthy food and fabulous hospitality! To the fantastic Dishcrawlers…thank you for your support, encouragement and incredible company. We saw some familiar faces, met some new ones and had great conversations along the way! Thank you for sharing this experience with us ~ coming with open hearts and hungry stomachs and an appetite for adventure and trying new things/places! It was a pleasure to spend the evening with you all and we look forward to more foodie adventures to come!

In the meantime, check out our photo album posted on Facebook for additional pictures of our evening and follow us on Twitter for future Dishcrawl news!

With much gratitude, your Edmonton Dishcrawl team!

Edmonton’s 1st Dishcrawl – Old Strathcona on January 25th, 2012

We started our inaugural Edmonton Dishcrawl on Wednesday night at three year old Sabzy Persian Grill (10416 82 Avenue)! Our hosts, Hossein Sabetghadam and his family, were kind enough to close down the restaurant for just us!! We learned about some of the background behind Persian food and enjoyed: quinoa taboulleh salad (it’s not even on the menu yet! We were the lucky group to have the first taste!), barberry rice mix (with saffron rice, raw pistachios, and sliced almonds), jojeh kabob (chicken kabob), and pita with house-made hummus.

Second stop: The King & I Thai Cuisine! The first Thai restaurant in Edmonton, it opened in 1991, three years after it’s original sister restaurant in Calgary. After a fire destroyed the original location, the King & I moved to it’s current location at 8208 107 Street. After a few anecdotes from floor manager Davis on behalf of owner Eric Wah about Thai food and some chuckles over the poppy

shrimp’s origins, we sampled their poppy shrimp, vegetarian spring rolls, pandulus chicken served with cucumber salad and coconut rice. Their cooking techniques differ slightly from traditional Thai techniques in order to make their food more pleasing to North American palates (for example, using canola oil instead of lard, which is commonly used in Thailand)!

A few blocks away was our third stop of the evening – brand new as of December 2011: Meze by Koutouki (11162 82 Avenue)! One of their owners who was our host for the evening, Yianni Psalios, has another restaurant on 124 Street called Koutouki Taverna, while partner Mo Kurani owns the Koutouki on Calgary Trail). Walking distance from the University of Alberta, this new Greek restaurant pulled out the stops and stuffed our Dishcrawlers with Greek treats.  Hummus, santziki & pita, greek salad, spanakopita, greek meatballs, dolamdes, saganaki (fried cheese) and bougatsa for dessert.

Our final stop came after a nice stroll back down Whyte Avenue to Accent European Lounge (8223 104 Street), where owners Garrett Boyko & Clayton Little and their team presented us with a special Dishcrawl menu! The theme? BEER! We began with a boccocini salad…continued with a beer-soaked oyster (featuring Innis & Gunn Oak Aged Beer), and finished our evening with chocolate avalanche cake from Wow! Factor in Sherwood Park!

A huge thank you to every one of our restaurants for the delicious food and great hospitality and to each individual in our first group of Dishcrawlers – an amazing group of foodies from around the city with great personalities, voracious appetites and wonderful conversations! Your love of food encourages us and we were so thrilled to be able to connect you all with these restaurants, their owners, staff and chefs! Having the opportunity to see and hear about the passion and inspiration behind the food we eat connects us to the local food providers in a way that’s heartfelt and meaningful!

Don’t forget to join us on Facebook and Twitter!

Looking forward to our next Edmonton foodie adventures!
