Dishcrawl Montreal Explores the Mile End

The evening began with our stomachs growling and mouths watering thanks to the delicious smell of Voro (275 Fairmount West) restaurant. We were served a great plate of food that consisted of stuffed roasted eggplant and onion confit, grilled stuffed calamari with Phoenician rice, and baked polenta topped with chorizo and orange chutney. A great start to get our stomachs calm again.

A short walk away we invaded Bu (5245 St. Laurent) like a flash mob sans choreographed moves. As the first wine bar in Montreal, they impressed us with their selection. Would we like to try 3 wines for $20? Yes please! We love variety. Next came our plates with a selection of charcuterie, homemade focaccia, and grilled bread topped with mushrooms, cheese, and a dab of truffle oil. Let’s not forget the fried olive stuffed with lamb and spices, and served with homemade mayo.

Next we arrived at Caffe Della Posta (361 Bernard). With the entire place reserved just for us, out came our very own Italian grandmother to present her menu for the night. We may not have understood everything but words like pasta, tiramisu, cannoli, and semifreddo were greeted with ohhhh! and yum! Our experience was truly an authentic one.

Barely able to breath, walk, or roll ourselves out the door, everyone left with a scrumptious red velvet cupcake from Laura Horniak in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The night ended great and those cupcakes left us reminiscing of the Mile End Dishcrawl the next day.

A big thanks to everyone who came out. You can check out all the pictures on Facebook by clicking here.

See you next time!

Eating our way through Montreal’s Old Port

The weather during our second Dishcrawl of the new year was not that much different from the first. With a snow storm in progress, we refused to give in to the cold and snow and made our way to the Old Port. Thankfully, Sesame (380 rue St-Jacques Ouest) was a warm and cozy place to begin. Warming up with some of their delicious teas and drinks in hand, we nibbled on what several of us concluded was the best General Tao in the city, a couple of pieces of sushi, some veggies in a warm red curry sauce, and pad thai.

Our next stop was L’Appartment (600 rue William) where we got to mix and mingle in the basement, which we had all to ourselves (barmaid and dj included!). Their delicious mohitos helped set the vibe while we nibbled on wild bison tartare on a lotus cracker, tuscan shrimp, short ribs, and tofu with peanut sauce.

Thankfully Grange vin + bouffe (120 McGill) was just a few steps away where we transitioned into raw food. I’m talking beet, beef, and salmon tartare. There was also a fantastic foie gras with a bit of sweet jam to polish it off. It was difficult to come to a consensus here. Everyone was willing to debate which one was best.

At Bistro Brasserie Les Soeurs Grises (32 McGill) a smoky auroma welcomed us upon arrival, signaling that our meal was ready. Gin salmon gravlax with capers was presented on a bed of fennel and pears, a black bean hummus with pasilla chile, a tostada with homemade salsa and pieces of beer and cheese sausage were delicious. For those of us who were adventurous enough to try the rabbit wings with homemade sauce, we weren’t disappointed. We were in complete agreement that the rabbit wings weren’t something we’d soon forget.

A big thank you to all of you who weathered the storm and came out that night and our restaurants who offered such memorable food. It was a blast, and I look forward to seeing you at the next one!
