Dishcrawl Prowls Crescent St. in Montreal

Our August Dishcrawl took us along a notorious stretch in downtown Montreal. Known for its bars, clubs and summer festivities, Crescent Street is always bustling with locals and tourists alike, constantly updating itself, yet remaining unchanged.  With Tracy on the other side of the continent, I had the enormous pleasure of hosting and guiding our 45 guests up and down Crescent, taking them to favourite places, some newbies and other well-grounded institutions.

Boustan

The evening began at Boustan, a Lebanese restaurant that serves up my favourite shawarma sandwiches. They are a legend on this street, where late night partyers fall victim to tasty pitas, stuffed with an array of ingredients all prepared in house. This establishment has been frequented by a few members of the Trudeau family, the Grey Cup and the occasional pro hockey player here and there. You can find pictures on display near the cash register, so take a glance while the friendly staff shaves the meat off the roasting skewers, and grill your sandwich to a crisp perfection. After twenty-five years of working long hours and sharing everlasting smiles with his clients, the owner Imad shared the story with us of how he got started, his love for food and the wonderful sandwiches he had put together for us. We had chicken and beef shawarma, but the true hero was the vegetarian. It is not always that the veggie sandwich steals the show but this truly is good as it is different from what you get at most Lebanese restaurants. Stuffed with the usual salad, humus, garlic, marinated turnips, this pita features an herby fried omelette concoction, grilled eggplants, zucchini, garlic potatoes and just plain magic. Most definitely a must try at any time of day or night when in need of eats!

Burger Bar

We then made our way to Burger Bar on the opposite side of the street, where owner Ari and Chef Brian were waiting for us with a special dish made just for our guests. Burger Bar is the newbie on Crescent Street, and though barely open for two months, they seem to be slowly becoming a favourite amongst burger fans. They pride themselves in offering a true gourmet burger experience. Though you will find a classic Mr. Personality Burger on their menu (lettuce, onion and tomato), you really go there for some more eccentric flavours such as the Supersonic Burger topped with onion rings, Jarlsberg cheese, bacon, dill pickle, tomato, banana peppers and spicy mayonnaise. Our Dishcrawlers got to taste the Big Bad Blue Burger, a fresh hand formed beef patties topped with blue cheese, arugula, tomato confit and a crispy potato chip on top. Flavours popped and the chip took the burger to the next level. Served with fresh hand cut fries, this burger was a great discovery and many are sure to return to try some more!

Troïka

Third stop, another Crescent Street establishment known as Troîka. Fifty years young and still a lush, Troïka is one of Montreal’s few Russian restaurants. It’s new owners – David and Stéphanie – promising to keep its tradition going strong, presented us with the evening’s dish (or dishes in this case), Zakouska! a.k.a. the Russian version of tapas. The variety of small hot and cold dishes are meant to accompany an evening of drinking vodka to help sustain the alcohol. With a wide selection of vodkas from all over the world to choose from, these small plates are a great way to get the party started or keep it going.

Swurl

What’s in a Dishcrawl if you don’t end it with some whimsical sweets? And Swurl Frozen Yogurt was the perfect place for that!! Brian was waiting for us with new flavours of frozen yogurt including Cookies’n’Cream and Irish Cream, but where he really goes wild is with his toppings. I’m not going to even attempt to name the many extravagant toppings available, save for one only because it is really crazy and he did first make it just for us. Are you ready for it? New topping at Swurl is the sweet glazed, slightly chocolaty Ramen Squares! Yes, you read correctly, and it looks like this one is going to stick-on as a permanent item there, but even if you don’t happen to see it in the self-serve counter, you can always expected some a little  different and a lot of fun from Brian!

As always, Dishcrawl is all about mingling with great people, eating delicious food, trying new restaurants, discovering new neighbourhoods. All this is what makes the Dishcrawl community a success! To be part of the Dishcrawl community or find an event near you, go ahead and browse our website, tag some photos in the Facebook Album, follow us on Twitter. We are reaching more and people every month!

Dishcrawl is welcomed by The Fairmont!

On a warm Tuesday evening, Dishcrawlers came from all around to eat in style at The Fairmont Hotel in Downtown San Jose. Sitting in the heart of Silicon Valley, The Fairmont has been providing guests with a luxurious experience since 1987. Providing diners with both elegance and decadence during this special evening, The Fairmont was the epitome of hospitality and luxury.

Known for its fantastic Sunday Brunch, The Fountain, open for breakfast and lunch, treated us by opening its doors after hours. Describing its food as American cuisine with an ethnic flair, the Fountain did not disappoint! Chef Sean Coose indulged Dishcralwers with a crisp yet buttery crab cake with basil aioli and smoked salmon on buckwheat crackers with caviar that was an excellent mixture of texture and flavor. A tomato gazpacho was the perfect and refreshing on our taste buds.

Our next stop, The Lounge, was the perfect place to lounge! Its dim lighting and dueling pianos created a relaxing atmosphere, perfect for an evening of drinks, from their extensive martini menu, and conversation with friends. Sushi chefs carefully crafted 4 different types of sushi from their in-house sushi bar as we listened to the pianists play classics like “Piano Man” by Billy Joel.

Third on our tour of The Fairmont was Pagoda for scrumptious Asian cuisine! While a DJ spun tracks, Manager Jorge Deiz welcomed Dishcrawlers to enjoy some of the best of what Pagoda has to offer, including a couple of his personal favorites! Dungeness Crab Egg Drop Soup, Mango Chicken, and Honey Walnut Prawns gave just the right balance of savory and sweet, leaving Dishcrawlers full and curious as to what other treasures Pagoda has to offer!

Our last stop was fit for the President himself! The Fairmont kindly opened up their Fountain, International, and Presidential Suites to Dishcrawlers, exposing us to sweeping views of the city, glimmering with lights. A pianist played in the corner while guests toured the three separate suites, with each offering treats to satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth. A chocolate fondue fountain with marshmallows, strawberries, macaroons, and other tasty bites for dipping were a chocolate lovers dream! Fresh sorbet and miniature tarts adored tables across the suites while Dishcrawlers nibbled and sipped on champagne, admiring the best of The Fairmont. All in all, a perfect ending to an exquisite Dishcrawl!

Love, Allison

Dishcrawl Digs the Glebe

Ottawa had its fourth Dishcrawl on August 16th. Michelle and I can’t believe how fast the time flies, it seems like only yesterday we were launching! And now we have four extremely successful Dishcrawls under our belts and a constantly growing Dishcrawl fan base. We are two very lucky girls!!

When we sat down to choose where we were going to have the August Dishcrawl we both instantly thought about the Glebe. We want to develop Ottawa’s food community but most importantly we want to support it. Supporting local businesses is at the forefront of our mission statement and what better time to show our support than during a period of street construction. We teamed up with the Glebe BIA to create a Dishcrawl that was all about food, fun and community. With the help of the BIA, Glebe businesses, Mayor Watson and a few other special guests we had a spectacular night.

Caution signs were thrown to the wind and close toed shoes were worn, just in case, as 79 local foodies Dishcrawled one of Ottawa’s favourite parts of town.

The Urban Pear Experience

Slightly off the beaten path you can find The Urban Pear just off Bank Street on Second Avenue.

Their Executive Chef Ben puts together a very seasonal and very local menu. You won’t find a tomato here when it isn’t tomato season nor a raspberry when it isn’t raspberry season. They source their ingredients from local farmers and have a constantly changing menu due to crop availability. For the group, Ben chose an item off of his Summer Menu; a pan seared sea scallop (fresh from PEI) with jester corn, basil, torpedo onion & eggplant spring roll and a chard tomatillo & taxi tomato salad with some cilantro crème fraiche.

Moving on and into the summer heat, we took a short walk around the block to a bustling restaurant called Fratelli, where Chef Serdar was awaiting our arrival.

The Fratelli Restaurant Experience

Established 15 years ago, Fratelli has mastered the neighborhood restaurant feel with its wall to wall Italiano decor and an unpretentious attitude. This family owned and operated restaurant now has four locations across Ottawa so you can pretty much find them anywhere. Their menu consists of deeply comforting Italian food. You name it, they have it and they are doing it right!

After a round of fresh bread and some wine the main attraction made its way to the tables. Chef Serdar prepared chicken stuffed tortellini with sundried tomato pesto cream for the meatovores and for the veggies a whole wheat penne primavera with pesto.

The dwindling summer evening beckoned us out into the streets; we were off again to our third food adventure of the night.

The Sushi GO Experience

Sushi GO has a creative, healthy and ever changing menu. They have locations all over town including the ByWard Market, Downtown, Gatineau, the Glebe and one is soon to open in Orleans. Word on the street is they also deliver!

Owner and sushi chef Joe welcomed us to his establishment and told the group all about the innovative things they are doing with sushi. On the menu was a traditional California roll as well as a vegetable tartar roll, which was a soy wrapped sushi with avocado, tempura crumbs and spicy mayo. The soy wrap comes in multiple bright colors, is completely vegetarian and is a great alternative for people won’t don’t care for seaweed.

After a super quick app we were out the back door of on place and into the back door of another.

The Von’s Bistro Experience

Von’s Bistro has been proudly serving the Glebe community for over 30 years. They are a testament to excellent food and great service; it’s no wonder why they have been around so long. Don’t forget, for those of you who have a hankering for seafood look no further than directly upstairs. Flippers is located directly above Von’s and offers a wide selection of fresh seafood dishes.
Owner Caren cheerfully greeted the group before our host for the night, Oliver, told us all about the restaurant and what their chef had created for us.

Chef Brent Genderon prepared a beautiful duo, one was off their summer menu and the other was a special non menu treat. As a first course we were presented with a cancun shrimp with tequila citrus marinade and smoked pepper drizzle. Followed by a lamb brochette with Yukon gold spring potato mash and St. Ambroise wild mushroom demi-glaze.

The Dessert Experience

In the Fifth Avenue Court all the Dishcrawlers along with a trio of businesses gathered to end the night in a sweet way.

Truffle Treasures

Truffle Treasures has two beautiful location in Ottawa, one in Westboro and one in the Glebe. You can find owner and chocolatier Lara at each location creating and selling her creations . Both of her locations offer hand made and lovely decorate truffles in countless varieties as well as chocolate barks, hot chocolate, gelato, dipped fruit and nuts among other things. As soon as you open the door to her store you are instantly mesmerized by the inviting smell of fresh chocolate. It’s heavenly.

Lara spoke to the group about a recent trip to Greece and her love of baklava. Luckily we also share this love of baklava and embraced her twist on the Greek favourite. She served a pistachio and fig Baklava steeped in orange blossom water and topped with a 70% chocolate ganache.

Arrow & Loon

Arrow & Loon is located on Fifth Avenue and backs onto the Fifth Avenue Court with means it has the only indoor patio in the Glebe as well and being perfectly situated to join the Dishcrawl. They feature a variety of 29 local craft microbrews from across Ontario and Quebec as well as well as a wide selection of bottled beer which includes gluten-free and non-alcoholic. They also feature hearty, homemade-style meals including made in-house bangers and mash, made to order pizzas, an array of burgers including fresh bison burgers, house-made hummus, and Mariposa farmed duck confit.

Jocob, the owner, wanted to appeal to the savoury dessert lover by providing large cheese and fruit platters as well as 4 huge plates of their Monday night special, chicken wings! Although chicken wings aren’t traditionally ordered for a dessert course they seemed to disappear very quickly just the same.

The Flour Shoppe

How could we have dessert in the Glebe without including its very own cupcakery, The Flour Shoppe! Melissa Somers is the mastermind behind the cute as a button shop that puts a sophisticated spin on an old fashioned treat. The shoppe features a daily selection of uniquely flavoured cupcakes, locally roasted Equator Coffee and sweet accessories. She baks from scratch, in small batches, and believes in using quality ingredients – Rich Callebaut Chocolate, Pure Vanilla, local, farm fresh butter and milk and a delicious selection of all natural flavour additions.

Melissa’s husband Chris was showcasing the cupcakes for her that night. He brought enough for everyone to try each flavour, which included chocolate chip pancake, chocolate peanut butter, toasted coconut lime and malted milk.

We will be Dishcrawling again in Ottawa on September 13th, tickets are sold out for the event so you better join our mailing list to be in the know about upcoming Dishcrawl ticket releases. October tickets will be available soon and we hope to see you all there!

Want more pictures of this event?? You can find them here. Also, see what our friends are saying at CulinarilyInclined.

See you all soon.
