Back in London with Brit & Chips ~ Montreal Restaurant of the Week

Hello London, how I’ve missed you so. I think of you longingly and count the moments until we can be together again. Thankfully, the crew at Brit & Chips are here to help temporarily ease the distance between us.

An immediate smile comes across my face as I enter this perfect representation of a London Chippy. The familiar layout, white tiles, and slender stools quickly turn a five-minute drive into a journey across the pond, for my much needed British fix.

The team is dressed up sharply in white shirts, black bow-ties, and the cutest driving caps. Their wide smiles tell me that they have become used to seeing people do a double take upon entering.

Excitedly, I sit down and scan the area ready to relive some English memories. Repeat visits are quickly scheduled in my mental calendar to fully appreciate each classic dish listed on the chalk board menus above the kitchen (oh, the sacrifices I make for food ;-) ). With fork in hand, I sit poised to begin, one bite at a time.

Tandoori popcorn shrimp makes its way over and is placed on the slender counter before me. Crunchy and flawlessly seasoned, the Indian spices gently nudge my delighted taste buds. The flavours unfold in waves, each just moments after the other. Ooh, this is good.

The Steak and Ale pie arrives quietly and more than makes up for its plain to the eye appearance with an outstandingly deep flavour. Delicious shredded meat, cooked up with onions and ale are hiding in an amazing flaky crust. Yeah, this is really good.

I continue on, savouring the experience with the one true test for any Chippy, the Fish & Chips. The golden crunchy batter snaps perfectly under my fork revealing the meatiest and juiciest fish. It’s simply delightful.   The fries, oh the fries! Cooked in sunflower oil they are both crispy and light in colour (the way they are truly meant to be).

As I turn around I notice it peacefully resting on the counter, a bottle of malt vinegar. Malt Vinegar! I’m filled with delight as I pour it over the ‘chips’. Bite after bite I enjoy a perfectly scrumptious happy moment.

Being full doesn’t always mean it’s time to stop eating, specifically when an item on the menu reads ‘Deep Fried Whatever’. I’m told that ‘whatever’ can range from various chocolate bars to local favourites like May Wests.  Today I’m in luck, I’m getting a Snickers Bar. Melted sweet goodness wrapped up in a crunchy batter has me laughing the whole time as I think about how wonderfully crazy this experience is!

London, we will be together soon. Until then you can find me at Brit & Chips.

As always, I can eat…

Enjoying Les Trois Petits Bouchons ~ Montreal Restaurant of the Week

Picture it; Saturday evening, 9pm, we walk into a restaurant that came highly recommended. The space is softly lit, and an air of coziness immediately surrounds us. The grey stone walls give us a sense of old world while the contemporary counters and hung chalkboard menus take us back to modern times. The murmur of patrons engrossed in their conversation is palpable, all seeming to be having a glorious time in this charming spot.
I’m at Les Trois Petits Bouchons.

We are seated and introduced to our waiter Felix. He becomes our evening’s guide as he takes us through menu items with pure passion and knowledge giving intimate details on each dish. We listen with growing appetites, and quickly realize that we are in very good hands.

The journey begins with a Tartine de Champignons. A gorgeous plate is placed in front of me and is filled with the most delectable sautéed mushrooms basking in a veal reduction, all laid out on a scrumptious slice of fresh bread. The reduction gently moistens the bread with its perfect flavours. Paired with truffle oil and arugula, this dish is flawless.

I allow my guide to select what my next adventure will be. There’s a sense of calm about Felix and his confidence tells me that he will make the right choice. He arrives with a tender, excellently cooked Magret de Canard. The sweet and savory combinations have my taste buds dancing with delight. The dish is plated with a fresh melon salad topped with some feta cheese. The sheer playfulness of the plate intrigues and delights.

We know the evening is not over until we indulge in dessert and Felix expertly suggests the Profiterole. A pâte à choux tenderly holds the delectable homemade vanilla ice cream infused with rose water syrup in place and deliciously bitter melted Valrhona chocolate displays gentleness as it smoothly runs down the pastry. A perfectly wonderful way to end our epicurean journey.

Les Trois Petits Bouchons will be seeing a lot more of me.

As always, I can eat…

Our Official Dishcrawl Launch in Montreal!

[vimeo 15778788]

The official dishcrawl launch in Montreal, led by the talented Marcella DeVincenzo (our head Montreal matchmaker and proprietor of Eataliangirl.com) hit the ground running with 30 foodies attending the sold-out dishcrawl in the Outremont area last Wednesday, September 1!  Seeing such a fantastic turnout had our minds spinning with excitement!

The mission of the dishcrawl?  To find the hidden foodie treasures Montreal had to offer.  And we succeeded. :)

Lively voices joined the excited chatter of Restaurant Salute promptly at 7pm.

We were greeted with the wafting aroma of fromage and rich mushroom risotto (our first dish) which was served in an aged Bagoss cheese wheel infused with saffron by Chef Angelo himself.

Creamy earthy tones danced on our tongues as the cheese melted into the very essence of our hearts.  A comfort hand-served.  A proud creation and a heavenly experience.  We were ready for the next.

The beautiful Montreal nights kept us happily warm as we scurried to the next stop ~ Lustucru!

Lustucru is known for their carpaccios and tartares.  We thought it only appropriate to have four tastes featuring the best of Lustucru be served that eve.

First, a salmon tartare tickled with lime and avocado.  Fresh, buttery, and alive with vibrant color of the crisp microgreens served on an cold plate.

Next, a swordfish carpaccio littered with chives and quebec strawberries sliced thin as paper.  The addition of fruit is something I have seen often in Montreal restaurants during the summer months.  I love noticing these trends.  Trends are the people of the region speaking to you through their food, as the Montreal chefs have done here.  Rejoicing in the summer months to be blessed with copious harvests of fruit and fresh greens.  Each bite was like tasting strawberry fields tossed into a salty ocean.  A nice marriage.

On to a simple beef tartare, but then… then the duck carpaccio.

Beautiful thin piles of sliced duck flesh holding wild blueberries and again, quebec strawberries.  Buttery game that melted on your tongue with the sweet cut of mixed fruits.  An experience of intrigue and raw surrender to adventure.

‘Twas only half way through- there were 2 restaurants left and we had already sampled 5 different dishes.  Marcella led our eager stomaches on to the third restaurant.  A true gem!  L ‘Atelier!

Gorgeous presentation made the room hush with delight.  We brought our voices to a whisper as precisely plated dishes appeared before our eyes.

Panko Crusted Lamb with Pineapple Confit on one side of the L ‘Atelier experience.  Lamb so tender it fell on fork’s command.  Panko crust and sweet pineapple added a dimension we do not usually expect out of lamb.  It livened up the mood of the meat which is usually a seductive and comforting experience.  Think of that luscious dame you love to eat, but put a lei around her neck.  This is what you got with this dish.  A favourite of the night.

Next, the Foie Gras Torchon, Dill, and Red Onion Marmalade!  Cool foie gras torchon, butter-like on the bread.  The red onion marmalade stood out and spread happily amongst the union of bread and torchon.  Fresh local dill added a wee scent of earth.

I was excited to see what else Marcella had in store for us.  How could anything top the last 3 amazing restaurants?

But then we ended up at Macaroni Bar.  And she said the magic words ~ Gnocchi Poutine.

With Chef Sergio personally introducing the food, all ears were intent on understanding the passion behind this unique fusion dish.

Handmade gnocchi deep fried to be crispy on the outer shell and soft inside, then tossed in a veal demi glace and topped with cheese curds.  True heaven.

Oh, but just as you thought the night ended, a parade of Pork Belly Lollipops brought us to another elated state of intrigue.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but as I popped the lolly into my mouth, I was happily impressed with juicy fatty meat spilling out onto my tongue right away.  Pure melted bliss to finish a night of fascinating foodie play.
